8. REPORT FROM JOHN DEAN 2010 ELITE / U23 ROAD CHAMPS CHRISTCHURCH
The opportunity to help the WCNI riders that entered the 2010 Elite Individual Time Trial and Road Races is always a pleasure and I thank those that did in fact enter the Elite Nationals. It was disappointing to view the numbers prior to the event and wonder why there is not more enthusiasm to compete and finish these races, perhaps there are just too many options today and for those that know me you perhaps will agree.
The Elite Nationals were well run, the event organization director Simon Hollander together with his race director Derrick Nelson had completed all that was required for the riders to have a trouble free days. There are just a few minor items, ie. change in feed station or at least an alternative position that will make this event in Christchurch a top event in the next 2 years. It was indeed excellent to see this organization bring the sport to the public and not the normal take the sport away from the public and it was interesting to see the road races held on the old Commonwealth Games road circuit although at that time the hill was ridden in the opposite direction. The length of the circuit was spot on, just under 16km and added for more excitement and interest, a circuit that is beyond the 20km distance is boring for all that follow the sport not to mention people (public) or interested parties to watch.
The time trial course was also excellent, although some distance from Christchurch city. The course was set out in the well known country town that is home of the Lincoln University and travelled along a well sealed flat road to Leeston and return. Unlike a road race time trials generally do not draw public numbers so the placing of this course was good. The start and finish together with presentation area was well set out and organised, the public were never in a position of being held up, an item that is important to the NZ driver being they lack patience of anyone else on the roads.
It was as always excellent to work with Zac Prendergast the Chief Commissaire a technical official who provides good judgements towards race progression with the balanced help of the rules.
The NZ Police Race Operations Srg. Chris Brooks was another excellent person to work with and had the riders best intentions at all times, we are lucky to have the assistance of people such as these as not all are so helpful.
Individual Time Trial
We were lucky with race start positions to follow both Women and U23 Mens TT with one rider in the Womens field Gemma Dudley, Jesse Sergent in the U23 Men, Josh Brown chose to withdraw late on Thursday afternoon not a good option with no medical certifcate but luck was with Josh as he received no TT sanction.
Gemma punctured prior to her race start while out warming up but she remained composed and rode her TT well as good be expected in the conditions which were windy in exposed areas.
Jesse did an excellent ride in the conditions as the wind increased as the day progressed, always excellent to follow someone in this side of our sport who has power, strength and speed.
Results Female: (WCNI only) 25km
16th Gemma Dudley 40.34.11
Results Male: (WCNI only) U23 (there were no Senior Men) 40.6km
3rd Jesse Sergent 51.56.72
Road Race Womans 124km (8 laps / 7 laps of the hill)
Rushlee Buchanan (Waikato and Bay of Plenty) today won the New Zealand Womens Elite Road Race with an impressive showing of intelligent riding from the front. Buchanan made a move from the main peloton at the 40km mark to bridge across to the first lap attack which included Serena Sheridan (East Coast North Island) and former National Road Race Champion and Marina Duvnjak (Auckland) who last week had won the Womens Tour de Femme in Nelson.
These 3 riders worked well but it was quite apparent Buchanan was the stronger and more relaxed of this group as they climbed the 1.3km Dyres Pass Road, a 1.3km in length rise. There was no surprise when Buchanan broke free firstly from Sheridan and soon after from Duvnjak but all were surprised at the lack of interest from the trailing peloton which by now had fallen to a six minute deficit. There were a number of riders in this group who were capable of better riding, Linda Villmusen (Columbia HTC), Kaytee Boyd & Toni Bradshaw both (Auckland), Karen Fulton (Tasman Wheelers) and Rachel Mercer (Wellington) were all very quite and it appeared there was a waiting game in the peloton although I will mention there perhaps some protection team riding on with the three at the front.
With one and a half laps remaining Buchanan was well into her ride towards attaining the Elite Road Race Championship, at last there was a move from the sleepy peloton. Villumsen together with Rachel Mercer put the hammer down and set about to bridge to Buchanan but as they received the bell indicating the last lap and 15km remaining and with Villumsen making a determed effort the last time up Dyres Pass Road the gap had dropped to 3 minutes. This huge surge was the end for Mercer who had done well to have gone with Villumsen.
Buchanan had completed an intelligent well calculated ride, had taken the race by the scruff of the neck and proved to all that she was indeed a very worthy winner of the 2010 RaboPlus Elite Womens Road Race Championship jersey that she will proudly wear for the following 12 months.
Villmusen was impressive and we wondered what would have been if she had moved earlier but she and others didnt, it was too late. There are some disappointed riders there after todays racing but when attacks start happening especially in the last 20kms towards
bridging to the leading rider in the race there are some quick decisions to be made, the word wait does not come to mind.
Gemma lost contact on the second lap first time up the Dyres Pass Road hill but fought her way back but unfortunately lost contact and did not make contact with the peloton and called it a day a couple of laps later.
Road Race U23 and Senior Men 187km (12 laps / 11 laps of the hill)
Michael Vink may have been the man of the day with his 150km breakaway but Jack Bauer (Wellington) was the winner with Hayden Roulston (Columbia HTC) and Julian Dean (Garmin Transition) filling the second and third placing of the podium.
Michael Vink who at just 18 years and racing the U23 race showed all again he is a champion for the future as he stayed clear of the entire field for 150km. Vink won the U23 individual time trial event on Friday.
Lap 1 of the 1974 Commonwealth Games road race saw immediate action, Sam Bewley recently gaining a contract to the Lance Armstrongs Radio Shack team was out to impress putting the entire peleton into single file, I wonder how popular he would have been as he called it a day a few laps later, the subsequent TV interview was not good public viewing reference his withdrawal
Lap 3 produced an attack with Vink (Subway Avanti) and Paul Odlin (Canterbury) moving away quickly to gain a 1 minutes advantage over the peloton, the gap to the front grew as the laps and distance ticked by but it was only time before action was to take a more serious tone.
Laps 5 and 6 proved a major challenge for some riders as rain presented itself and soaked the roads and the decent of Hackthorne Road proved the undoing of a number. Service to complete make-shift repairs proved just too long and their racing was over for the day. The chasing towards the front was now to a solo rider, Vink had said goodbye to Odlin and his lead remain at 3 minutes.
With 3 laps from home the pressure went on as both Dean and Roulston were now in bussiness mode but Vink the U23 rider still held a 2 and a half minute lead. Vink was to suffer an untimely puncture as he approached the Dyres Pass Road hill for the second to last time and his gap was now cut to just over a minute. He was however pulled back with 22kms to go and both Roulston and Dean made an immediate attack to go clear with a 18 second margin. Bauer was soon to bridge this gap together with Tom Findlay another U23 rider, the others were now left struggling and accepted that it was all over, the Dyres Pass road had taken its toll as they were all clearly suffering.
The sprint to the finish ended with a complete surprise, at the 200m mark the riders were still out of sight of all waiting at the line, as they turned into view, it was 150m out from victory, from where I was standing Dean appeared to loose traction as his rear wheel jumped across the road, he was lucky not to have crashed but clearly plenty of frustration on both Roulston and Deans faces as they went across the line.
Local New Plymouth rider Brett Tivers although now domiciled in Melbourne completed a intelligent race but he suffered at an untimely mechanical failure with a rear wheel, the
subsequent chase with no assistance took its toll in the final 30kms but he did recovered sufficiently to finish in 8th place in the Senior Mens Race.
The Mens U23 race was held together with the Senior Mens race, although the controlling body of road cycling in New Zealand had made the decision last year to race separately but the promoting organization continued the older format.
It is difficult to give a true indication of the U23 race as both Senior and U23 men make use of one another, I wonder when the controlling organizations will cease this practice and run as all other countries including Australia separate races. Forget the better media interest, if the races were held on separate days there will be even further media coverage, believe me.
Road Race Senior Men 187km (12 laps / 11 laps of the hill)
8 Brett Tivers (West Coast North Island)
Mens U23 Road Race 187km
1 Tom Findlay (Bici Vida) 4.48.45
9 Jesse Sergent (Trek Livestrong)
Thanks for the opportunity towards helping and advising our WCNI riders who have the drive to achieve their personal goals and potential, it was a pity that more did not take the opportunity.
Signed John Dean.
WCNI Centre would like to thank John Dean very much for his comprehensive reporting, a letter of thanks to be sent to John.

9. REPORT FROM WCNI TRACK CHAMPS WANGANUI 22ND to 24TH JAN 2010
Friday night 22nd got underway and program was completed. Saturday it rained all day non stop. Sunday racing got under way after raining in the morning and finally started around 12.30pm. A very disappointing small number turned up with few visitors. There was criticism that because change of program that riders were given insufficient time to warm up for pursuits. Two records were set but times were only taken from two watches so not official. Gemma Dudley Womens 3000m Individual Pursuit recorded 3.59.85 beating the 18 year old record time of Madonna Harris. Peter Jenkins Masters 2 Mens 3000m Individual Pursuit time was 4.00.90. It was agreed to ask Ron Cheatley if these two could do a record attempt at his River City Wheelrace Carnival Spectacular on February 21

13. GENERAL BUSINESS.
Email from Noel Anderson read out, this discussion stays in Committee. It was agreed to send copy to Commissaire involved and ask for his reply to be discussed in committee for next meeting. It was moved by Ian Gray seconded Jeremy Cottam.
It was agreed to find out from PNP Club which weekend next year they are holding their Track Champs so that we dont clash like we did this year and to advise Ramblers when all our events are.
Rachael Cottams letter also was read out re a Carnival held at Wanganui Velodrome Sunday Feb 7th. Rachael was very disappointed that there was such a low turnout. It is a disappointment for the club running events like this and with the NZ Track Nationals coming up riders need to attend all such Carnivals. Wanganui was very lucky that Wellington riders turned up.
Next year riders need to attend as many Carnivals as possible as these are put on in the riders interest to give them as much competition before NZ Track Nationals.
It was decided that skinsuits hired and not returned after Nationals (as this has happened from last year,) that we put the hireage up to $50.00 full refund if returned before one month after event but, if skinsuits are returned after one month of the event only $30.00 to be refunded. Skinsuits are to be returned to Centre Secretary.
